THE REVENGE By Shirley Conray

In case you have watched theatre have you wondered what goes on behind the actor's life? This book is not only about London theatre but about revenge. It is about the feud between two acting families.

Mimi Quinn's life is altered when she runs away from home. She joins the Jolly joe troupe. she is thrilled by the music hall. Besty Bridge her friend, due to her beauty stands out and is successful. But one night Mimmi door in the music hall is locked. There is a fire. When people come to save them, Betsy says there is no one inside and mini burns.

She is saved but not without enmity towards Betsy. Revenge is on Mimi mind. Image your best friend doing that.

Mimi marries  Toby whose father owns a music hall. She acts in the plays there like Cinderella. Betsy comes along there to get a role. Mimi still remembers the fire and makes sure Betsy does not get the role. Betsy then goes to New York to try her luck. But will she succeed there?

Betsy wonders that Mimi has a husband and a child so why would she do that?

The book shows the fascinating life of mini versus Liverpool slums. This is a colourful story set in the music hall. This is also a historical drama set in the first half of this century.

I would recommend this book for its simple nd lovely writing.

One can see that he author has done research when writing this book.

Kabuliwala by by Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath was a Bengali  composer, philosopher and painter.  He is the first non-European as well as the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

This story is about relationships. A merchant comes to Calcutta every year to sell fruits. He is lonely. When he meets mini he becomes close to her.He has a daughter and maybe that is why he feels close to mini. At first, mini is scared of him but then is seen chattering away with him.  Also mini is talkative. The name of Kabuli Wala is Rahmat.

Rahmat Talks to Mini about her  In-Laws place.. Rahmat about her own daughter when saying this. Rahmat wants to roam the world and thus talks about kings in faraway lands.

Rahmat talks about deserts and people in them. This is a sign that his homeland is in Afghanistan. He is also taking a fatherly role because maybe he misses his daughter. But mini's father only sees Rahman as a fruit walla and gives him half rupees.

I found one dialogue funny. She tells the gatekeeper that the elephant puts the water in his trunk and makes it rain. The mischievousness of Mini, the attire of the Kabuliwala and their friendship is shown perfectly.

After many years Rahmat comes to meet Mini. Does she remember him and still has the same affection towards him. Read this lovely story to find out.

Little Woman by Louisa M Alcott

This is one of my favourite classic books. Louisa used the pen name, A.M. Barnard. Little Women is based on her relations with her three sisters. This book is directed towards children and teens.

The four sisters are Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy.   The setting is during the American Civil War (1861-1865) in Concord, Massachusetts. Their father is serving in the army. All four sisters are different from each other. The adventure of these four is given.

Meg the oldest wants a marriage with no worries. She is the most beautiful of the four. Jo wants to be a writer and travel the world.

Beth is taught by her father at home. By nature, she is timid hence homeschooling. Amy wants to be an artist and is good at drawing. She does not consider her noise to be pretty.

The novel central theme is about the dreams and aspirations of the girls. The feelings of each character are shown in a wonderful manner. As a writer, I found this useful. According to Regina Barreca, professor of English and Feminist Theory at the University of Connecticut, autonomy, creativity, freedom, and community are the legacies of Little Women.

The writing is simple and I felt like the book should never end.

other books are

Part Second of Little Women, Good Wives

Little Men: Life at Plumfield with Jo's Boys
