Gun Island By Amitav Ghosh

The book starts with a person called Dinu who meets Piya.  Dinu is a dealer in old rare books. They casually talk about a shrine in the Sundarbans. The shrine is dedicated to Manas Devi Goddess of the snake . His curiosity gets better of him and he visits the shrine.

While at the shrine he encounters a king cobra.Thereafter once while on a plane he sees snake outside. Cinta an old friend of his calls him up. The story thus shifts to Italy and then to Los Angles.

There are fires raging in Loa Angles. It is shown that due to humans there is a climate  change. Then there is the angel of human trafficking. If you can manage with so many stories it would make a great novel .Though there are many stories all are interlinked.

This book is a sequel to the hungery tide. Ghosh has talked about climate changes in the past. There are storms and spiders due to climate changes in the novel. Ghosh seems to adapt the climate change angle in the book.

Read the book with an open book.  There are tales full of historical and literary references ranging from Tarantism, the Aztecs to the Catholic inquisition.Overall i found the book entertaining.

A Place Called Here by Cocelia Ahren

This book is about missing People. At the central story is Sandy Shortt. She runs a missing person agency. Jack Brother Donal was missing.

Jack decides to hire Sandy. But While going to meet Jack Sandy herself disappears. Sandy lands up at a place where all the missing person are there.  She learns the stories of these people one by one.
The book starts well but somewhere along the way the story gets boring.

I somehow could not relate to this book. It keeps going from where all missing people are to the present. But there is imaginationalso.
Some might relate to the story of sandy. Maybe the part about having problems. She also has a counsellor which many students don't have.

The character story is a bit difficult to understand. Thought the concept of the story is fresh. On ascale 1 to 5 i would give it 2.5 In case you want to read it ,read with an open mind .

The leader In You by Dale Carnegie

To survive in the 21 st century the world will have to undergo a profound cultural change. There are a lot of books on this. Then what is different about this book? The difference is that examples from real life are given.

One such example is this. Suppose some people are smoking under the no smoking sign in a factory. What would you do? Scold them. This is what you should do. You should go up to them and talk like nothing has happened. They will realize their mistake and stop smoking.

You should motivate people by naming things after them. You should praise people and even ask for their opinion even if they are from the shop floor.

Dale says you can make more friends by just being interested  Lynn Povich worked for Newsweek and got promoted as a senior editor. Only one person was not happy. But Lynn did not bother about this. He spent time with writers and talked to each one of them. The person in question later told Lynn that he thought Lynn did not have the experience to be a senor section head. But seeing him work it was clear that he was the right choice.

One should respect the dignity of others. This was shown by F .D. Roosevelt. When a mechanic came to deliver his car he took notice of every single detail about the car. After some time he told the mechanic "I've been keeping the Federal Reserve Board waiting for 30 minutes. I guess I had better get to work".

All the examples are time tested and can be used anywhere. I know this book will be useful for many people

The Return Of Merlin by Deepak Chopra

In this book, the past and present come together. The book begins with King Authur who is seen fighting his enemies. His son is trying to defeat King Authur . His son the evil wizard Mordred, is trying to fight Authur.

The scene shifts to the present day. In this book, characters are transformed in the present era. Melchior the apprentice of Merlin is a dragonfly who is trying to locate Merlin.

In the present day, a man is found murdered. The police who finds the body is called Authur . Could he be King Authur? All the charters live on till the present day. Then there is Edgerton. It seems that he had set on fire the school mascot spaniel named Chips.

Edgerton could not believe that his friends Sis and Tommy had witnessed a murder. In addition to wizards, the plot is replete with dragons, magic, Tarot cards, sacred stone circles, the Holy Grail, Arthur's sword, Excalibur, dreams and spells.

Deepak Chopra is a health guru hence it is surprising that he could handle this stuff so well. His most famous book is Ageless Body, Timeless Mind.
